Could this photographic object be a part of the subject’s identity that, projected to the outside, keeps on living in an another place and container? This idea of stratification is also connected to Balzac’s “Theory of spirits”, which lays the foundations for the feeling of ambiguity and superstition which from the dawn of photography characterizes the medium: in the XIX century it was a widespread belief that Photography could rip up a layer of the soul of the object or of the subject it was taking a picture to, by trapping it into the photographic object. We are complex and stratified human beings. We are human beings exposed to perpetual transitions and transformations, we change depending on the eyes of who’s watching us, we change depending on how we look at ourselves. The concept of Identity is, now more than ever, fluid. When we photograph ourselves, what we decide to show to others and what to hide from them? Which image of ourselves we believe it can identify us and how it can be in conflict with the image the others have about us? The Avatar-individual becomes part of a community and, due to that, he feels the heat to confirm his Identity, even through the photographic medium. So, could an avatar be a representation of how the individual perceives himself? If in the virtual realities of the web, of the video games and of the dream, it’s not necessary that the Avatar- Individual interacts or discusses with the others, this is instead a fundamental condition for being on the social platforms. An Avatar, a surrogate that resembles the individual, but which can be shaped as he likes, in order to be everywhere at the same time in the virtual world, an intangible parallel world, which however can be experienced through a substitute. On the other side, a digital identity can be build up by the same user. The Digital Identity is an identity made of numbers, that has been assigned to the user, in order to identifying him while surfing the internet.
